The use of R22 as a refrigerant will be prohibited by the end of 2013.
This leaves the owners of R22 systems with two alternatives:
- To change from R22 to an other Freon mixture.
This is less costly than other alternatives but has two major draw backs:
One is that the replacement refrigerants for R22 means lower capacities on existing equipment, something that is not an option in many cases.
Second the replacement's for R22 are weary active greenhouse gasses, therefore many mean it is only a matter of time to when restrictions will be put on there use. - To change to a natural refrigerant like NH3.
The change from R22 is costly an involves changing out all or most of the existing equipment.
But it is a long term solution, with the benefit of lower running costs.
Frost has already converted two Norwegian trawlers from R 22 to NH3 and conversion of the third trawler is ongoing.
